So Ive seen excalibur, finally ! :D It was a long awaited watch for me, as I was waiting for a dark epic fantasy film to watch. The aestethics are just insane, but I didn't know anything about the legend really, so I do judge the film only on what I see andthe cohesion of everything, not its resemblance or story telling of the actual story.

~~~~~~~~~ Urther time ~~~~~~~~~



First thing started at the character of Urther, who was an enormous bitch and felt like no one was acknowledging it properly. At the very beginning, you see how much he was obsessed with fighting, always asking for a blade to fight, demanding it out of Merlin. Everyone was supposed to serve him as king, he was so full of himself.

Then, I don't understand why Merlin was so sure of himself to give to the enormous bitch that is Urther Excalibur, knowing how powerful the sword was. I do understand that it would help them make peace, but still.



THen, I oviously hated how the other guy used Igrayne to "make her dance" as his wife. Just simply hated it, you did not need to show how submissive she was. Even tho it does make us hate the guy, I don't think it was planned, as I prefered him over Urther. MIght be because we didn't know him/had no personnality tho.



I oviously also critique the way that he said he "needed" Igrayne for one night. LIke literally wtf, control yourself monster. Good depiction of how lust is dangerous tho.



Because here comes what evryone should agree on, no matter your thoughts of the old/current morals; He abandoned his men. HIs lust literally engaged a new battle that he could have stopped if he wasn't only thinking about himself. Basically killed people to be able to rape Igraynne. Also doesn't have any honor.

Also, when he went to rape Igrayne, He abandoned his troops to "maybe" die. Since the other guy was searching his camp (even tho eventually died), he put his men at risk of being killed right there.

Also one of the reasons I prefer the other guy, which is that he didn't come here to decimate everyone, but just to come kill their king, which is rightful vengence for breaking a peace treaty.



We come to the moment he goes to the castle to rape her. Obviously hated how he handled her, he literally forced her to kiss him, fucked her with his armor too ?? Hate how she was depicted as liking it, and when giving birth as just not having any resentment towards him.



I do like tho that Urther did take her as his wife, and was in love; it wasnt just a one night stand. So like why even fuck her in the first place? was that really all that matter to him ? to men ?



Urther has a small ego. When he sees Morgana, she has his "father's eyes". And bascially since he sees in her his father, he sees his competition, and cannot take it. I find this hilarious because why in the fuck is your resentment directed on a chlid? Why do you think of her as a menace ?



Also, Morgana was depicted as a silent child. Like was it supposed to feel weird ? Is it weird to be a girl and just be silent ? Reminds me a lot of Jane eyre in her childhood, a lot of people seem so insecure that they interpret silence in a child as malicious, because they overthink it.

Then, she became a menace to everyone. The thing is, not only do we not know why she was so "dangerous" (or at least i didn't get it), since we are not given any of her objectives.

Loved how she was okay to manipulate the king to have his child.

Surpisingly, I also didn't like Arthur :D in the very beginning, it was, ig, pretty okay. He really contrasted with the knights that were foolinshingly fighting. He geuninely seemed lika a good guy without ego or particular egocentrism, he was serving is brother and father very well. He was a good guy.

Then, he took the sword out of the rock (I absolutely loved the context, even tho previsible).



THing is, he did stay with Merlin, which we understand why, and he immediatrly starts learning how to fight, and literally kills once near the castle. So youre telling me an average man just kills like that ? Without remorse, without empathy ? Just because hes "king" ?



Also, liked how Guenevere was protecting herself against a knight, hated how she was salivating over Arthur. Why does society want us to always salivate over men ? Is it because of its patriarchal nature, that wishes to be loved and put on a pedestal ? Why can't they live without female approval ?

I do think that is the reason why the "loneliness epidemic" is happening ; men always feel entitled to a woman who loves them, as portraid in ALL MEDIA. But since we do become more and more independent, more aware of our choices and how society made us think, we reject this idea: thus leading to a sense of "unfairness" in males.

In general its so fucked up that the main antagonists (guenevere, morgana) are female. OKay, you have Urther and Lancelot, but Urther has never been called "bad" by Merlin, the only one who mentioned him after his death. And when Arthur was talking about the betrayal, he never oce said that lancelot was a bitch, because while he called Guenevere "", Lancelot was called his "bestfriend" (do you see the dichotomy ?).

He does still say he is in love with his wife tho, so a win ig.

So, Should older media be seen through our moralities of today, and how should it matter in its rating?



I think that making a film, especially based on such a big legend, should reflect ad be true to the base material. If not, it can purify and change history in the eyes of the current age, thus modifying our view on those people. It can make them free of guilt, which is no good, as some may idealize them. But the person they idealize is but a mere mirage, an image of a person.



So maybe, all of what I critcised was for a personal reason, to see by myself how desastrous those times were. It actually allows me to exerce my own thinking skills on those characters.



I do have another thought tho. Can we say that publishing those stories is normalising those horrendous acts ?

I do understand this point of view, but if taken, we should simply not publish adaptations of these medias. But if not, aren't we forgetting the past? Having a collective conscience of our past is important not only to learn from it, but to remember it. So basically, we should continue to publish and adapt those older medias, but WITH A CRITICAL THINKING. you should absolutely not come to any media without thinking skills really. If you're not judging the media, what are you doing ? Simply passing the time ?



We should absolutely critique it, as it is the very essence and raison d'etre of these films. I you are simply loving everything, I do think you are brain dead, as I am most of the time.



To rest, simply lay down, draw, or any other activity that does not require anyone telling you something. If left alone, you cannot be compromised/influenced by anything.



The integrity of your judgement is what makes a good society. If the people of the democracy do not think by themselves, if they do not form opinions, the democracy is ruled by the influencers. And a society ruled by a few is not for the better of all.
